Top Myanmar Diving Sites

Myanmar has been popular for its diving sites for 10 years. A vast area of the ocean is covered by diving sites in Myanmar, this area is also known as The Mergui Archipelago. The real charm that most divers find here is big fish sightings. The sites are exquisite and its pristine islands are colonized by only some groups of Moken sea gypsies. This makes the diving experience even more enchanting.

Divers who are looking for unoccupied locations will find more pleasure in diving in Myanmar; usually, diving sites are not crowded. Liveaboards are the only way to dive here in Myanmar. There are no quick tours and trips; you need at least five to seven days to explore the vast area of the archipelago.

There some intense and exquisite diving spots in Myanmar that would really give you the perfect diving experience because of the macro life and rare reef fish blooming vividly at the bottom of the ocean. Listed below are some of the top diving site to delve.

Western Rocky Island

The Mergui Archipelago’s best diving spot is this limestone island. It contains an attractive subaquatic terrain. The Western Rocky is a series of peaks instead of just one big cliff. This island is located 80 km from the coast of Myanmar. It even has a tunnel which passes right through the island. The limestone island has clefts and crevices which provide shelter for the various sea creatures. The depths around this island varies from 10 to 40 meters and currents can be strong at times. One might occasionally come across Gray reef sharks, Whitetips, Blacktips and sometimes even Bull sharks.

Fan Forest Pinnacle

Moving a few miles to North of the Western Rocky Island, the Fan Forest Pinnacle is located. It escalates from such depths which have not been dived even by recreational divers. But around the pinnacle, the depth is about 5 meters. Black coral, big barrel sponges, and orange sea fans are the features of this place. This site, too, is an impending spot to come across large fish. The vivid assortment of sea creatures, especially at deeper depths, makes the dive strikingly dramatic. Currents here are also sturdy.

The Burma Banks

The Burma Banks are positioned less than 150 km West of Kawthaung. These are a series of submarine mountains having a height of 300 meters; they almost rise to the surface of the water. They are fifteen to twenty-two meters deep on the top where there are flat areas. The depth drops off gradually on the edges. More intense drops in depths can be experienced in some banks but there are no vertical drops to be found. Professional divers usually dive in this area since careful planning is a requisite before diving in this area. Reason being that currents are strong and depths are dangerously steep. The real appeal of The Burma Banks is the guided drift dives which lure divers into this area. Sharks may not be found around here but you will certainly catch the enchanting sight of dogtooth tuna, jackfish and Spanish mackerel that perambulate the reef edges.
