Visit a Palm Reader at Sule Pagoda
This Burmese stupa located in the heart of downtown Yangon is not only a religious and historic landmark, but also known for palm readers and numerologists. As per locals, serious decisions are never taken without consulting either a palm reader or a numerologist. Believe it or not, the government decision to move the capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw was also based on a palm reader’s advice.
Just with birth details, one can head to a palmist at Sule Pagoda to know how the future looks like. This unique opportunity shouldn’t be missed in Yangon.
Take a Bando lesson
This defensive unarmed martial art form is quiet popular in Myanmar. It emphasises defence as the best offense by leaving the initiative to the opponent and relying heavily on counter moves. The offensive forms in Bando are based on animal movements, such as boar, bull, cobra, monkey, leopard, tiger, viper etc.
Taking a Bando class for self-defence can be truly exhilarating and unique.
Try playing the traditional Chinlone
Also known as “caneball” – this traditional Burmese sport is almost 1500 years old and was created as a means of entertaining Burmese royalty. This non-competitive game is typically played with six players playing together as a team. And similar to hacky-sack, it is played by individuals passing the ball between each other within a circle, without using their hands.
Watching the game itself is a unique experience one shouldn’t miss. With some key technical inputs from a Chinlone master, one can try this game with the locals. Influenced by traditional Burmese martial arts and dance, right technique is necessary to master this game.
