For first time visit to Yangon or Myanmar, the majestic Shwedagon pagoda is one of the must-sees that you should never miss. This holy site plays an important rule in local daily life as well exposing the typical Burmese culture.

Unique Architecture
Towering high, the pagoda started life at a mere 8.2 metres and over the years it has grown to its magnificent stature of today – it is now almost a whopping 110 metres tall. Shwedagon is located near Kandawgyi - known as Royal Lake. It was covered by thousands of diamonds ( about 4,500) on its top while jewels and golds are added to its decoration is also enormous. 
The site dominates the skyline of Yangon both for sunrise and sunset for its golden flash.

Iconic beauty of Yangon
The reason why Shwedagon is always rated the first attraction you should immerse in in Yangon comes from its rich history. Shwedagon was built in 6 century DC, representing all the development of Buddhism in the city. It is said to to shrine sacred Buddha relics.
Nowadays, the pagoda remains its role as one of the most famous pilgrimage sites attracting millions of Buddhist practicer every year. 
Along with the fact that Shwedagon Paya boasts remarkable architect, visitors also can capture how people pray in different corners. 

Visiting Guide
There are four entrances to the complex, three of which have several sellers with flowers and other religious offerings. The best way to access Shwedagon is to take a stroll from Kandawgyi lake. 
The site turns to be photogenic at dawn and during the light festivals. As a religious site, you will be asked to take off your shoes, wearing knee and shoulder covered clothes to pay the respect to Buddhism. 
We recommend you to take a guided walk to enjoy better the details of Shwedagon.

Entrance fee is 8,000 kyat, and there are also many donation boxes around the complex in aid of various things. Camera fee is not included. 
The Shwedagon Pagoda is open between 4am and 10pm most days although on special religious days it is open for 24 hours.
