The busy city of Mandalay, once the glorious capital of the last Burma Kingdom inherits mandalay traditions and fascinating arts. Since the country opens its door, visitors to Mandalay now has more chances to experience the highlights of Mandalay arts and here are some must-sees:
Traditional arts :
1. Cultural show
Myanmar dancing is a cultural art involving rhythmic movements of head, waist, legs and hands. In Mandalay Hill Resort, you can experience the Dance from Dynasties, depicting the life of Burma through 1000 years history with music, fashion and art. The performance runs 3 times a week with nice ambience for some drinks.
2. The Moustache Brothers
The Moustache Brothers Troupe (Mustache Brothers) is a group of banned anyient ( dance and comedy show) comedians. The three moustache brothers are Par Par Lay, Lu Maw and Lu Zaw. Par Par Lay used to be a very well known comedian in Myanmar, until his arrest and prison sencente, together with one of his brothers, for seven years. Their performance demonstrates the different sides of life through interesting verbal languages and body movements.
You can visit the Moustache Brothers at their house in 39th Street, between 80th and 81st streets, Mandalay.
3. Marionette Theatre
Known as Mandalay Puppet Theatre, this art centre was established by two laides in 1986. The very first show was conducted by the two founders were Ma Ma Naing, daughter of U Thein Naing, the writer of Burmese Puppet Theatre (1966) and Naing Ye Mar.
Marionette Theatre in Mandalay is probably the best place to enjoy this art in Myanmar. Each performance has three parts:
- Introduction to Myanmar traditional dance and music
– Myanmar puppet show
– Buddha’s Story and/or Ramayana Story (optional part)
Bar and Lounge:
Gem Club and Kipling's Lounge in Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel
Gem Club is more for drinking that eating, as the place only serves light snacks while Kipling's Lounge is another place in the Mandalay Hill Resort Hotel that night owls would love.
