Located about 80km from Yangon, Bago is a fascinating place to explore a historic land, once the ancient capital of Burma Kingdom

Bago, also known as Pegu is located 80km northeast from Yangon city. The city owns its existense to two princess from Thaton while according to an legend, Buddha had predicted this place will prosper Buddhism.

How to get there

From Yangon, the best way to reach Bago is to rent a car in Yangon with driver. It takes about 1,5 hours driving. 
Train from Yangon station to Bago takes about 2 hours while local buses lasts for 3 hours with many stops.

What to see 

Bago has both cultural wonders and lush natural reserved areas. There are tourist attractions and activities that can make you occupied for 2 days :

Shwemawdaw Paya
The most notable pagoda of Bago can be compared with Shwedagon of Yangon in a smaller scale. It was built during the Mon Dynasty then rebuilt again after the earthquake in 1952. 

Kanbawzathadi Palace
This palace is a must-see for any trip to Bago. It was the residence of King Bayinnaung from 1553 to 1599.

Kyaik Pun Paya
Kyaik Pun is famous for its 4 Buddhas sitting back to back. It was constructed under the order of King Dhammazedi in 1470. 

Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha
A reclining Buddha statue resembling Buddha on the day of Nirvana. It is surrounded with decorative glass panels showcasing the life events of the Buddha and guardian nats (spirits).

Bago Market
If you feel like experiencing the local life, Bago market is the place to be. The market displays a wide range of local woods to some typical Burmese souvenirs. 


Moe Yun Gyi Wildlife Sanctuary
For those who look for a nature escape from Yangon, Moe Yun Gyi Sanctuary has something to offer. It is also a popular birding spot in South Myanmar.
